Our friends at HorseTalk have come up with what we think is the definitive article on the question of horse floats and towing regulations.
They maintain that not long ago, the word was out that horse floats were on their way to extinction. Not so...and the proof is worth a read.

Sarah from the NZTA says;
'Most vehicles have a tow rating given to them by the manufacturer specifying the gross trailer weight braked, unbraked, or both, that the vehicle can safely tow.
Although not law, these ratings should be taken into account. In addition, the law requires that every light vehicle and trailer combination must be capable of stopping within a distance of seven metres from a speed of 30km/h. This means that the maximum allowable weight of an unbraked trailer is limited by the weight and braking ability of the vehicle being used to tow it.
